BENEFITS
Tips for all Drivers at Mesilla Valley Transportation
3 Points of Contact
Use 3 points of contact (2 hands and 1 foot or 1 hand and 2 feet), when entering and exiting the truck. This is especially important in extreme weather conditions.
Use Caution When Handling all Trailers
Bend at the knees when operating the crank handle to raise and lower the landing gear on all trailers. There are two gears on the crank. Low gear is for loaded trailers. High gear is to be used on empty trailers.
Always wear proper footwear
Wear proper footwear at all times when you are working. Closed toed, rubber soled, and/or steel toed shoes are preferred. Flip flops or house shoes are not allowed on any yard.
Caution When Opening Trailer Tails/Trailer Doors
Use both hands when pulling the cord that is used to secure the trailer tails. Use both hands when opening the trailer doors and step to the side as the doors open. If cargo has shifted during transit it can fall out of the trailer.
Pulling the King Pin and Sliding your Tandems
Extra precautions need be taken when pulling the king pin. The use of a hook is preferred. Please ensure that the tandem pins have been locked into place if you are sliding the tandems.
Truck Alarms / Sudden Starts
A sudden start is defined to be an increase of 4.5 MPH or more within one second. This leads to poor fuel mileage and tire/transmission wear.
Canada Trailer Tails Policy
- It is mandatory to close trailer tails before entering Canada.
- Canada issues fines ranging from $2,000-$10,000, as they consider trucks with open tails to be past maximum length.
- If the driver does not close the tails and is charged with a fine, the driver will be responsible for the full amount of the fine as well as any legal fees incurred by MVT.
High Visibility Vest
Drivers must wear their high visibility vest in all MVT Terminals, MVT Yards, Customer Facilities, or Drop Yards.
A Message of Encouragement as You Become Part of this Legacy.
Tips for Improving Performance and MPG
Take off easy without exceeding 4.5 MPH within one second.
Go easy on the brakes. Anticipating stops can help avoid hard braking. Using less force (torque) can help prolong the truck and tires, and save time on repairs.
Be consistent on the throttle.
DO NOT IDLE (Use Your APU).
Increase the following distance to maintain consistency on your accelerator.
Visually inspect equipment if you notice something wrong.
*If you notice something is wrong, report it to the shop immediately.*
Minimize or reduce TOP speed.
Avoid increasing speed while going up a hill. The engine will do 80% of the work by applying only half the throttle.
Remember, having a positive attitude helps while out on the road. Whether it is equipment, driving, dispatchers, or weather try to always maintain a positive attitude.
If you are driving on a mountain road, you will need to release the pressure on the accelerator when you approach the crest of the mountain. This will keep the RPM’s low, and help increase MPG as well. Ask your trainers about this if you have any questions.
If you need to use cruise control, use it responsibly. It is only intended to be used on flat terrain, in good weather conditions, and in no traffic. Keep in mind, cruise control utilizes 100% torque when there is any resistance on the road (such as on a small hill).

Pet Authorization
A driver is authorized to carry one pet under the following conditions:
I understand I may carry only 1 warm blooded pet, including dogs and cats.
I understand that I am solely responsible for keeping the truck that I drive clean and free of pet odors, insect infestation, pet feces, urine, waste, and litter.
I understand that if my pet does any damage to the truck, I will be held financially responsible for the cost of the repairs. This includes any costs associated with removing any pet odors from the truck.
I understand that if I transfer units, I must clean the unit I am leaving. If I do not clean the unit properly, and it has to be cleaned, I will be assessed a charge for the required cleaning and agree to have such cleaning charge deducted from my payroll.
I understand that I will be held solely responsible if my pet injures or causes damages to anyone. In such event, I agree to indemnify Mesilla Valley Transportation for any such claims, judgments, or payments, including all associated costs and reasonable attorney’s fees. I agree to RELEASE MVT from all liability for any injuries or other damages caused in whole or in part by my pet.
A non-refundable pet fee of $500.00 is required to carry a pet in an MVT truck. This fee will be charged in five (5) payroll deductions in the amount of $100.00 each. Failure to comply with any provision of this authorization will result in this authorization to carry a pet being revoked.
Truck Return
Upon changing trucks or leaving the company, drivers are expected to return any issued truck to the company (El Paso Texas, Laredo Texas, or Nashville Tennessee Terminal) in a reasonably clean and serviceable condition.
If you go home and do not have a pre-plan within 48 hours, you will have to remove all your personal belongings from the truck.
Any personal items left in the truck will be placed in the warehouse for a short period of time. MVT assumes no responsibility or liability for personal items left in the truck.
Any vehicle that is altered by the drilling of holes, cutting of openings, application of stickers, posters, etc.… Will result in the driver being charged a restoration fee.
If a CB radio does not fit into the existing brackets, drivers are not permitted to drill holes to mount CB hardware. Any damages that are not reported will be investigated and may be charged to the driver for failure to report. Driver may also be subject to termination in some cases.
If a driver is scheduled to leave the company, he or she can ONLY return the truck to either the El Paso, TX, Laredo, TX, or Nashville, TN, Terminals. If a truck is not returned to the mentioned terminals, a driver will be charged a recovery fee including, but not limited to, mileage and cost of personnel to recover the unit. A driver will not be allowed to leave a truck at an MVT drop yard or other MVT location.
Non-Compliance
Fuel & Routing Non-Compliance Policy and Fines:
- Drivers are required to follow the MVT Fuel Routing System. If an exception is required, or the weight of the load is greater than 40,000 lbs, extreme weather or other adverse road conditions, the driver is responsible for submitting a MACRO 50 through the Form Messages field of their ELD. No other Form, including Free Form Messages are acceptable for a fuel or route request.
- Failure to follow a dispatched route with no alternate route authorized as a result of a MACRO 50 (out of route) will result in a fine based on the rate per mile, plus the cost of fuel, if applicable.
- Any driver taking Corporate or National Restricted roads (ie I-70 West of Denver during the winter) $100.00 Fine.
- Drivers are required to top off on DEF at the El Paso Terminal.
- Unauthorized fueling: Drivers will be charged the difference in the cost of the fuel from where they fueled versus where they were instructed to fuel.
All new drivers will be granted a 30-day grace period with regard to fines. Not every violation of the fuel policy will be a fineable offense. Regardless, no fines will be charged against a driver for any violation of the fuel route policy before the 30th day of employment.
All drivers will receive a “final warning” of a fuel route violation regardless of hire date. While no fines are incurred during the 30-day new hire grace period, service failure violations can be accumulated with regards to driver performance and compliance of company policies.

Differential Lock
The LT International trucks can engage the diff-lock while the vehicle is moving at speeds less than 25 MPH. If the vehicle exceeds 25 MPH, the diff-lock will self-cancel. Example: If a driver faces a slick grade due to ice or snow, and the driver feels he or she is losing traction, the indicator will be a traction control light. At that time, the driver needs to release the throttle and engage the diff-lock and gently use the throttle pedal. A solid green light on the diff-lock switch will indicate the differential is locked. Again, if the vehicle exceeds 25 MPH, the diff-lock will cancel and the light on the switch will blink. A blinking light on the diff-lock switch signifies the axle is unlocked. To re-engage the diff-lock, it is not necessary to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. *If you stop on a slick grade, chances are you might not get moving again.* Lower the truck’s speed below 25 MPH, simply move the diff-lock switch to the “off” position and wait about 2 seconds with your foot on the accelerator, then place the switch back in the “on” position. The light on the switch will stop blinking and you will have traction on both drive tires.
This feature needs to be used wisely; in the event of snow or ice on a grade or on/off ramp or parking lot. Use the diff-lock before you encounter a wheel spin and keep the speed down.
SCR Tractors
The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) fueling cap is located directly below the driver door (under the black arrow). It is blue and plastic. The diesel fuel cap is silver and metal.
**NOTE** on the non-SCR units, the DEF tank is located where the driver’s side diesel is.
The DEF tank has a 23-gallon capacity. Approximately 2-3% of total fuel consumed will be DEF fluid.
The total diesel capacity on these tractors is 240 gallons.
It is extremely important that the correct product goes into the correct tank. DEF fluid is NOT to be put into the diesel tank. Diesel nozzles are larger in diameter and cannot usually fit into the DEF intake. Pay attention to avoid mix ups.
